1. User Information

Fire up XChat or go to XChat -> Network List or type Ctrl+S.

Think of a nickname and type it in the User Information field, choose a second and third one in case the first one(s) are already taken.
Choose your username (also named ident) and a realname, that doesn't have to be your real name, you can just make something up there.

2. Choose a network

Choose the network you want to join in the 'Networks' list and click 'Connect'.

3. Add a network

If the network you want to join is not in the list, in this case IrCQnet (IrCQ-Net), you will have to add it.

Click on 'Add'. An edit box with 'New Network' will appear.
In the edit box fill in the network you want to join: "IrCQnet"
Click 'Edit' and an Edit IrCQnet dialog will appear.

4. Edit Network dialog

In the Servers for IrCQnet box you will see 'newserver/6667'.
Click 'Edit' and fill in the server for IrCQnet: irc.icq.com
You don't have to add a connection port if it's the default one (6667), other connections ports you will have to add like this:

irc.icq.com/6666
irc.icq.com/7000

5. Use different nicks for each network

Uncheck 'Use global user information' and fill in your user information there if you want to use different nicks for each network.

6. Auto connect at startup

To auto connect to a network at startup check 'Auto connect to this network at startup'.

7. Auto-join channels at startup

In the 'Channels to join:' edit box fill in the channels you would like to join.

To join several channels at once seperate the channels with a comma like this: #channel1,#channel2,#channel3 (no spaces), or choose your channels later.

8. Favorite Channels (Auto-Join List)

In XChat 2.8.6 and above the field to fill in your channels to join is called 'Favorite channels:'.
Press the [...] button next to the 'Favorite channels:' edit box and a 'Favorite Channels (Auto-Join List)' dialog appears.
You can just add the channels you want to auto join there.

9. Add to favorites in channeltab

It's also possible to add channels to your favorite channels list by rightclicking a channeltab and select 'Add to Favorites'.

10. Execute multiple commands on connect

The easiest way to execute multiple commands on connect is creating a text file where you type your commands line-by-line (see picture) without the execute command character (forward slash).
In the 'Connect command' edit box fill in the command: "LOAD -e /path/to/textfile"
They will be executed in the order they appear in the textfile.

Also User Commands (aliases) can be used as commands to connect (idchans). (User Commands) (Timers)

11. Nickserv password

Is your nickname registered, you can then type your nickname password in the 'Nickserv password' edit box, then when you connect it will auto-identify your nickname to Nickserv and automatically joins the channels you have filled in in the 'Channels to join:' edit box.
Check the NickServ Commands pages on how to register your nickname.

12. Character set

If you are using a different character set than someone else on IRC, you will receive their text as garbage. If you change your character set to Unicode (UTF-8) you will be able to see most accented-letters, umlauts and upper-ascii-chars. Unicode got characters for every language. (Charset IRC)

13. Join dialog

Now that we have done all that, click the 'Close' button and you are back in the Network List again.
Click 'Connect' and you will automatically be connected to your network (IrCQnet).

If you filled in your channels to (auto)join and your nickpass in the server edit window XChat will now automatically identify your nickname and join your channels.

If you didn't fill in any channels in the server edit window, a join dialog will appear. If you know the name of the channel you want to join you can type it in the 'Join this Channel:' box. Click 'OK' and you will join your channel.

Don't panic if your nickname is not registered yet, you can do that later, check the NickServ Commands pages.

. You can also choose which channels to join after you have connected to your network.

You wont need this join dialog if you filled in channels to join in the server edit window. Choose the first option (Nothing) and click 'OK'.

Choose 'Open the Channel-List window' if you don't know which channels to join yet, you can also do that after connecting.

14. Choose your channels with the channel list

You are connected but you don't know which channels to join yet, take a look at the Channel list.
Window -> Channel List. (2.8.6+ Server -> List of Channels...)

Click 'Download List' or 'Search'. Sure you will find a nice channel of your interest there. Click 'Channel' one or two times to see the channels in alphabetical order, 'Users' to show the channels users amount or click 'Topic' to show channels topics in alphabetical order.

15. Unhide/Retrieve the userlist

If you can't find the userlist once you've joined your channels, click and hold the left edge of the user list (red vertical line in the picture) and drag it out from the right side just like in the picture.

Have a nice chat :)
